Standard Metal Keys
Standard metal keys are basic mechanical keys with no electronic components. They are found mainly on older vehicles and are the simplest type to duplicate — a locksmith needs only a blank of the correct profile and a key cutting machine. If your vehicle uses a standard metal key, duplication is quick and low cost.
Transponder Keys
Transponder keys contain a small microchip embedded in the plastic head of the key. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the chip transmits a unique code to the vehicle's immobiliser system. If the code matches, the engine is allowed to start. If not — even with a correctly cut blade — the engine immobilises. This means transponder keys require programming to your specific vehicle, not just cutting. The transponder chip is standard on virtually all vehicles manufactured since the late 1990s.
Remote Key Fobs
A remote key fob adds wireless remote central locking to the transponder key. The fob contains a radio transmitter that communicates with your vehicle's receiver module to lock and unlock the doors without inserting the key. Remote fobs can be combined with a physical key blade (a flip key or combined fob) or supplied separately. If the fob stops working but the physical key still starts the car, the issue is likely the fob battery or the remote signal — not the transponder chip.
Flip Keys
A flip key (also called a folding key) is a remote fob that houses a retractable physical key blade. When you press a button, the blade flips out ready to use. These combine the remote central locking fob and the physical ignition key in one compact unit. The blade can be cut and the electronics can be programmed — both are required for a functional replacement.
Smart Keys and Proximity Keys
Smart keys — sometimes called proximity keys or keyless entry fobs — allow you to unlock your car and start the engine without inserting a key into anything. The vehicle detects the fob's presence when it is within range (typically within a metre). You unlock the car by touching the door handle and start the engine by pressing a push-start button. Smart keys require programming to your vehicle's control units and are the most complex type to replace. Most luxury vehicles and modern mass-market cars sold in the UAE use this technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Standard metal keys (found on older vehicles) only need to be cut. Transponder keys, remote fobs, flip keys and smart keys all require electronic programming to the specific vehicle in addition to cutting the physical blade.
